Not only did Genesis achieve a tremendously successful career, critically and commercially, but so have the band members, with Phil Collins, for example, of Peter Gabriel, who has been with Genesis in its early stages, successful as solo artists as well. Gabriel's direction, a more art-progressive rock style, was not only against his band-mates will (which led to his departure from Genesis) but also unlikely to have yielded such pop success as was their share in the 80s.
