Country Joe & the Fish, was initially a recording alias. Among leader Joe McDonald McDonald's other activities in 1965, he was publishing a radical journal called Rag Baby. Accounts vary as to how Rag Baby got started, but it would make Country Joe & the Fish among the very first, if not the first -- music act to use self-produced records to promote themselves directly.
